Arthramid/synamid is a 2.5% polyacrylamide gel, that has shown efficacy in limiting discomfort associated with osteoarthritis in approximately 80% of patients. This product has been used for more than a decade to treat joint pain caused by osteoarthritis in horses and humans and has been labeled for use in dogs since 2021. Once injected into the joint space the product incorporates into the joint lining (synovium) reducing inflammatory pain. Because arthramid incorporates into the synovium it has a prolonged effect (12-24 months).
Spryng osteocushion is a newer therapy composed of naturally occurring proteins (collagen and elastin). Unlike arthramid, which incorporates into the joint lining, Spryng stays within the joint space. Spryng addresses mechanical malfunction in diseased joints by providing a shock-absorbing matrix with natural fluid biomechanics that work together with synovial fluid to mimic joint cartilage in both form and function. The effect is also long lasting with reports of more than 12 months of effect.
Prostride- APS and Restigen are orthobiologic joint injection products produced from blood samples using a proprietary system. The result is a concentrated solution of cells, platelets, growth factors and anti-inflammatory proteins. These products have shown efficacy in laboratory, equine, and canine studies. This can help with the inflammation and discomfort of osteoarthritis, but is not a cure and may require more than one injection for effect (often recommended). They are also used to stimulate healing of injured tendons and ligaments, which are typically slow to heal. This injection can be beneficial in conjunction with shockwave, lasers and rehab.
Hyaluronic acid is a joint lubricant found naturally throughout the body and is typically injected with steroid. The effect of this therapy is usually about 1-3 months. As such it usually needs to be repeated.
There are a number of new products in development or coming to market soon. These include allogeneic and xenogeneic PRP and stem cells. The data for these products are limited. As newer products become available and data is presented the list of options will be expanded.
These injections are usually performed under sedation. If your pet is not a candidate for sedation, Anicell injections may be a safer option.
