Great Dane myopathy is a rare, inherited muscle disorder that affects young Great Danes. It’s characterized by progressive muscle weakness and atrophy, and exercise-induced tremors. Onset of clinical signs is usually before one year of age and both sexes are affected.
Symptoms include muscle weakness, muscle wasting, exercise-induced tremors, difficulty breathing, and abnormal posture.
In chronic tears, there is small damage that occurs without sufficient healing leading to more damage. This is referred to as achillodynia. Achillodynia can eventually lead to a complete rupture. In acute injuries we see a disruption of the tendon that ranges from mild to a complete rupture. A history of trauma may be present such as a jumping down, lunging, or a laceration.
Causes of Great Dane Myopathy entails a mutation in the bridging integrator 1 (BIN1) gene.
Diagnosis of Great Dane myopathy is via blood tests, Electromyography (EMG), Muscle biopsy, and Genetic testing of the BIN1 gene.
In rehab, our big focus will be to address muscle weakness and atrophy present by performing gentle strengthening exercises to help rebuild overall muscle mass, but making sure to carefully monitor breathing pattern and presence of tremors. The next area of focus would be improving stability and overall stamina by starting with positional balance exercises and then progressing into dynamic movements. Once the dog has sufficient stability, we incorporate gait training and improving functional transitions for day to day routine.
