WHAT TO expect

WHAT TO expect

What to expect at your pet's first appointment

At Walking Paws Rehab our appointments are not your typical vet visit. Our practice is very unique in the way we practice.

Prior to your first appointment, we request records and any diagnostic results from your veterinarian. Your doctor will review these 24 hours prior to your consult. Your pet’s first appointment will be about 1.5- 2 hours long depending on your pet’s needs. During your initial consult, our doctor will conduct a positive, fear-free assessment. This assessment may include an orthopedic, neurologic, and soft tissue exam, in order to create a list of areas of needed focus and help direct our treatment plan.

During the appointment we will review exam findings, where the site of injury is, compensations, and any other additional ailments caught on exam. Your therapist will explain the injury, how we go about healing, and answer any questions that you may have. We may suggest next steps, treatments, therapies, supportive devices, and any medications/supplements needed.

Your therapist will then create a personalized rehab treatment plan for your dog. In addition, we build a home program and if interested, will teach you what to do at home. This may consist of techniques to stretch, massage, perform range of motion, and exercise depending on your pet needs.

If time permits, we will get started on treatments during your initial appointment. This may include laser therapy, ultrasound therapy, electrotherapy, shockwave therapy, acupuncture, manual therapy, massage, exercises, or hydrotherapy. Your therapist is there for you and can adjust the appointment flow to what’s best for you and your pet.

At Walking Paws Rehab, we can perform diagnostics and dispense pain medications if needed. We also perform advance regenerative medicine procedures. Any diagnostics, prescriptions, or advance procedures are not included in the consult fee. Advance diagnostics such as MRI or CT will need to be performed at a referral center.

Please note, if your pet is presenting for an orthotic or prosthetic leg, then the appointment flow will vary since the focus may be on getting the appropriate measurements and molds to manufacture a device as quickly as possible.

Follow-up appointments for your pet are about an hour long and are tailored from appointment to appointment to ensure we are reaching your goals for your pet. Frequency of physical therapy appointments are individualized to your family and your pet’s condition. We work closely with your schedule, budget, and goals to create a plan that will have the most successful outcome.

We look forward to working closely with you to help your pet walk comfortably again!
